Hi Ladies,
I'm looking at starting to apply for colleges(I'm a junior in high school) and wanted to know if any of you knew of MTF friendly colleges/ universities in Missouri? I'm hoping to start transition when I turn 18 next year starting with therapy :) I want college to be a happy time, not one where I'm scared to be Kayla.
Kisses,
Kayla

Kayla you are so smart to be planning for college!  Broaden your knowledge, world view and personal fulfillment while gaining a major financial salary edge for life.  Missouri has several large universities and the less expensive community college options to choose from.  You are obviously adept at finding internet resources and you can check for "Mission and Values" type of statements or the more specific non discrimination/diversity policies of most institutions.  You should also be able find a list of clubs and events such as GSA or LGBT campus groups.  Most public college campuses are very cosmopolitan and sophisticated enough to consider LGBT folks no big deal.  I am an out college trustee and heading to Washington DC next month as part of a national discussion on campus diversity.  While over 600 universities and colleges and 19 states in the USA have policies that prohibit discrimination toward transgender people we have a ways to go to bring all of our public institutions (and hearts and minds) up to speed.

You might consider your high school counselor, and most colleges over a career day or events for recruiting potential students.   Visit the campuses you are interested in and consider the free "Upward Bound" or Trio summer acadamy offerings.  Asking about "progressive" campuses may be a term that provokes less bias?

Reliable studies indicate that the vast majority of transgender students have real concerns about their basic safety at school.  High School was torture for a sissy kid like me.  We need to now do what we can to ensure safe, welcoming and diverse campus cultures for all students and faculty.  Thanks for being a thoughtful student!

I've only done research on two schools (university o' las Vegas, university of Nebraska) that I may be possible attending, it seems that both use the same "Aetna" student health plan.. Aetna covers hormones(15 dollar copay for generics, 25 for name brand 1 month sup.) and therapy (free if done on campus clinic), best thing is they cover a fat chunk of change for SRS but the 1 year real life test is required. (Cost covered was something like a 80% ) «there are rules and limitations so take what I say with a grain of salt but this plan is not bad if you ask me... only bad thing is the plan will cost over 2300 a year and every service requires a small copay which could get expensive, but not enough to add up to a 12-15K  SRS so that's a screaming deal for me. Aetna does health service for schools all over the country so look em up.
