Hello all,

I wanted to share some stumbled upon information I discovered about changing your driver's license gender marker. As many of you know, the passport gender marker change is a relatively simple paperwork process and doesn't require SRS in the US. I changed mine a few months ago.  Recently, I went to get a new driver's license because I lost my wallet. My state "requires SRS" to change gender marker. I have had top surgery, but did not show the papers needed to change my marker. Instead, I calmly and confidently approached the DMV desk with my "Male" passport and "Male" driver's license paperwork filled out. And when she printed out my driver's license with an "F", I said CALMLY AND CONFIDENTLY, "Oh Hey, there's an F on this." She freaked out and said ,"HUUUH?" Looked at my M on my passport then said, "I'm so sorry sir, I have no idea how this happened."She printed out a new one with an M on it and I walked away. She said "as long as it matches the passport, that's all I need." No big deal whatsoever.

Of course, I have been on T for 2 years and I have an almost full beard, so I know this may only work for those of us that pass 100% 24/7, but I definitely think it's definitely worth a shot for those who don't have the appropriate top surgery or SRS paperwork in their state. If it doesn't work, I'm sure you could calmly say that you thought a passport with the proper gender marker was enough to warrant a gender change on the license.

A name change is a must, of course, and I think it would be easier if you "lost"/lost your license, rather than turning the F one in to them for a new one.

Just thought I would share this with others who may not be able to afford the appropriate paperwork, for whatever reason.

Just remember that confidence and calmness are the keys here- they will get you far in life, from my experience.

Also please share widely and if someone wants to put this in the MTF forum, that would be cool- because it may work for them as well.\

Good luck and heads up, :icon_dance:

I appreciate this! My state requires SRS too :P I won't have a chance to use this for a year or two, but I will for sure when I can.

well, with this method, you don't need SRS - thats why I posted it. All you need is a passport with an M on it - which you can get without SRS in the U.S.

Yeah, I was going to say. I don't believe one should need SRS to have the correct gender marker, and it's not like they're going to trace this to you or anything, but I'm pretty sure if she knew you were born female it would have been a no go. So technically it could be considered falsifying documents.

Yeah, what I mean is I won't be able to change my name and passport for a while, hopefully within a year, but I'm not sure. That's all I mean by I have to wait for a year or two.

As my doctor explained to me, if there's a doctors note it's not falsifying anything. He's going to write me a letter to get my gender marked as M on a passport (when I get one). That letter will hold up in court if anyone ever tries to argue. It's the same as him writing me a letter giving me permission to use male facilities. If anyone fights me on it, my doctor will back me up 110% and his letter is legal.

Doctors notes do not override state or federal policy. Please remember that your doctor is not a government policy maker, a lawyer, or a Supreme Court judge. Just because he wrote a letter does not mean that you can present false information to the government. Again: doctors notes DO NOT override federal or state laws. Please be very careful about things like this. Even something that seems harmless has a way of coming back and biting you on the rear.

Falsifying legal identification can and does lead to charges and in some cases prison time. While I think it sucks that we can't get our markers changed easily (unless you move to a different state or country in some cases) never falsify legal documents. This would be like using another social security number.
