Allergic reactions to tape

I've been binding with a sports tape for the past three months. I use two strips per boob and place it to wear it's holding it out to the side. then I wear a sports bra over that and I have a moderately flat chest without feeling like my ribs are being crushed by an actual binder.

For the past two weeks pulling the tape off has resulted in my skin being reddened, but since I only use it three days out of the week (at work) I figured I'd keep doing it and let my skin heal the other four days. Yesterday I wasn't wearing tape, and suddenly broke out in a rash. It's specifically right where the tape lays on my skin when I'm wearing it. At first it was blotchy and itchy. Now it's raised and itchy. I have a very red, raised strip of skin along my ribs, and the rash also covers my nipples. I'm absolutely miserable.

I can't get these things cut off fast enough. They're nothing but misery for me. If I don't tape them down then I get called she. If I do I get called he, but then have to rip tape off. And now this. It's humiliating. I have my HRT doc appointment Monday and if it's still here I'll definitely talk to him about it and get a script, but since I know where it came from and why, and since it's not spreading or causing any other reactions in my body, I'm going to medicate at home and hope it goes away soon.

I had the same problem with tape. Just remember that different tape has different materials for the adhesive, so you may be okay with a different brand.

I just have to use a cloth binder now-no more tape.

Hi,

I've been working with adhesives for 17  years as part of my job.  An adhesive is difficult to make and requires more than one type of chemistry.  However, a person will most likely get skin problems after long term use.

Best bet is to change the tape to a different manufacturer.  Everyone seems to have their own formula and no two are the same even if they use the same type of polymer.  Next best is to go to a different type of tape with the same manufacturer.  There are also some optically clear medical adhesive bandages that will do the same thing so you could try one of those (Tegaderm Patch is an example).

Good Luck!

To move forward is to leave behind that which has become dear. It is a call into the wild, into becoming someone currently unknown to us. For most, it is a call too frightening and too challenging to heed. For some, it is a call to be more than we were capable of being, both now and in the future.

Excellent advice, thanks! I'm still healing but it's gotten a lot better. No longer a burning itch, just annoying if the binder rubs a bit.
