What happened in my home town was an abomination, and a classic example of when those just following orders try to think for themselves, while following the letter of the law, but not common sense. They inadvertently caused a massive human rights violation.
Canada is one of the most forward thinking, and liberal countries on earth, with a fantastic track record in trans rights. The rest of the world should follow us.
Unfortunately, somebody with no clue about gender law had to look up in some archaic law book what to do in a situation he had not encountered before. The result could have been disasterous. Education, and common sense, was the only thing lacking here.
I am not by any means condoning the actions of Canadian law enforcement, but Avery was attempting to enter Canada illegally. (illegal by omission, paper work problems).
I have enough faith in the Canadian legal system to think this is being properly addressed, and will NEVER happen again.
I'm glad to be Canadian. I am proudly trans, and can go where I like, be employed, I am in a same sex marriage, and my gender is legally recognized. Most should be so lucky.
I hope you all can recognize this as a TERRIBLE MISTAKE, and not the policies, and practices of a wonderful country.
