The 13th District Court of Appeals in Corpus Christi issued a landmark opinion Thursday in favor of Houston trans widow Nikki Araguz, ruling that Texas must recognize the marriages of trans people.

The opinion, written by Chief Justice Rogelio Valdez, reverses the 2011 ruling [which had] ruled that Araguz was born male and Texas' 2005 marriage amendment doesn't recognize her marriage to a man.

Houston attorney Kent Rutter, the lead attorney for the appeal, said [. . .] "What the decision today says is Texas law now recognizes that an individual who has had a sex change is eligible to marry a person of the opposite sex[".]

Should have been moot anyway IMO since gender shouldn't matter for marriage, but at least she is finally being viewed by the courts properly.

Texas, makes some progress at least.

Actually, I found this distressing and upsetting.

Does this send chills down anyone else's spine? That you need to have surgery you may not want (or your health may not permit) in order to live a normal life as a woman?

I don't like it sure, but I have very low expectation especially from places like Texas. I am less concerned about how they codify exactly what changing sexes entails, and more worried about them passing a law that says it is okay to burn transpeople at the stake. Perhaps that is a bit hyperbolic but, I guess with the level of discrimination especially in employment I am just thankful for whatever crumbs we can get.
