I was on them (cipro) for a little over a week. The preop prep meds were way worse than cipro ever was.
edit: shouldn't your surgeon be the one giving the medical advice around antibiotics?
Cipro is the one I was afraid of (or any of the fluoroquinolones for that matter). That stuff is plain nasty and should be taken off the market / banned completely. It destroys the body, plain and simple. If I were you Flan I'd never ever take it again unless it was life or death.
Sorry don't mean to scare anyone, I just can't stress against fluoroquinolones enough. There is an entire community of people who have been "floxed" by these drugs and it has lifelong effects that no doctor would ever talk about. Everything from muscle to nerve to mood disorders.
I unknowingly started taking Cipro following my FFS when we thought I had a surgical site infection (turns out it was just swelling). After 4 pills I was shaking uncontrollably with heart palpitations and anxiety attack symptoms not knowing what the HECK was going on. It popped into my head that it was possibly from the meds- and sure enough when I looked it up I was on the verge of having a really bad allergic reaction.. which is extremely common with Cipro and other floxing drugs.
I urge anyone not to ever take Cipro... unless they are hooked up in the ER with a life threatening systemic staph infection. Shame on doctors!
EDIT: shame on the pharma industry, actually. Doctors are tight
