Jared Leto Wins Best Supporting Actor And The Backlash Begins

TQNation blog

The transgender community needs to grow up.

Yup, you heard me correctly. Childish behavior doesn't get you very far in life, especially when it comes to positive recognition. I read an article today that ended up making me feel disgusted (as bold as that term is) about the response the trans community gave as feedback and "backlash" at Jared Leto's Oscar-winning role as an HIV-positive transgender woman, Rayon, in
Dallas Buyers Club.

The paragraph I got to that made me physically grimace was, "Outraged groups questioned why a straight, male actor had been chosen for the role and why he had neglected to thank the transgender community during his acceptance speech."

Why, may I ask, are you looking for something WRONG...something to point a finger at, to debate, to mock, to be snide about? Why, may I ask, can you not simply see the POSITIVE fact that the role of a transgender-female won an Oscar?

Let me remind you...Hilary Swank is a straight, female actor who played Brandon Teena in Boys Don't Cry and won Best Actress.

I am going to append this to the original blog entry:

TQ Apology: Official Statement In Response To Yesterday's Post About Jared Leto

After reading the numerous comments, I realized that yesterday's post cut deep and that was not my intention. The analogy of "childish" and "whiny" was not appropriate and the message was completely lost. For that I apologize with a grieved heart.

I was siding with trans woman Calpernia Addams in my stance; however, my tone was abrasive. I could have worded it all in a different fashion, in a way that would not be misinterpreted as being disrespectful.

I was dismayed at what many of you believe was the message and my belief system from my post. I have countless friends who are trans women and I have been an advocate for this community since 2007...seven years ago. To say that I'm a transmisogynist couldn't be farther from the truth. I sincerely apologize if that is how my words came across.

Honestly I haven't seen the movie and it's not something I would really pay to watch. But for the most part these activist types are pretty silly and get upset over the least little thing. And I think they are misrepresenting us. And besides Jared Leto will always be Jordan Catalano to me no matter what role he plays. ;)

I think that the outrage sparked by Jared Leto's portrayal stems from a) the fact that trans actors are very infrequently chosen to portray anyone be it straight, gay, cis, or trans and b) the character of Rayon reinforces some not-so-positive stereotypes about trans women.

When I saw Dallas Buyers Club I was moved by the performances of Leto and McConaughey and thought that they both did a very good job at embodying these characters. However, the movie did make me question whether I had ever seen a dramatization of the AIDS crisis which had featured lead roles played by people who have actually experienced the pain and the drama of living through that crisis. I also think that often when trans characters are portrayed, there is a trope of a tragic existence and often demise of these characters which mimics the statistics of homelessness, self-harm, attempted suicide, drug use, and hate crimes affecting people who fall beneath the umbrella of trans identity. I think it would be nice to see a trans person on screen who thrives in order to give hope to other trans people who are living with the harsh reality of the systemic oppression weighing down on them. Maybe even an Oscar winning performance by a trans person in which the role they play doesn't end in death. Hilary Swank and Jared Leto both shed light on the types of truly f---ed up things that happen to our community but that isn't the only narrative.

I think that movies can be a major life changing force for a lot of people and it is really important for there to be many many different portrayals of trans folks by trans folks to change the predominant views of us by cis people and ourselves.

Also, if you look at it another way, Jared Leto could be seen as taking away a role from a trans, woman actress. Seeing as unemployment is also a really big issue for trans people, it is really unfair to cast cis people in trans roles.

And it's unfair to cast Hugh Jackman as a mutant when there are so many real mutants unemployed, unfair to cast Will Smith as Agent J in Men In Black when the original character was white and unfair to cast an animated bee in the Nasonex commercial when there are so many real bees looking for work.

This is just such nonsense.
