One of the members, Toni, just gave my a positive rep point. It was very kind, but I was particularly touched by what Toni wrote:
Consistently awesome at welcoming deserves recognition
Toni also kindly noted Jessica Merriman's actions.
I sent Toni a "thank you" PM, but I thought I would put some of it here to explain why I believe the Introductions Board might be the most important on the site.
New members are often questioning, sometimes scared, and in a way beginning the coming out process. I believe that the first contact is most important, and that they need to know they have friends here who understand.
I try, as do several others, to greet every new member who has reached out to us.
I felt welcome when I arrived here in November 2011. At the time I was just beginning my journey and I was looking for support groups locally (never did find one!). I had lurked since Spring of that year, trying to educate myself, figuring things out, and taking advantage of the volumes of information to be found here.
But, truthfully, I was just an observor until I signed up and began to interact with the good people here. It was then that I began to feel like I was part of a community. And that was a major step forward for me.
Greeting new members is my way of giving back to the community that accepted me.
I'd like to let every new person here know, whether they are questioning, just starting transition, learning to cope with their dysphoria, have already transitioned, or are allies of other transpersons, that I appreciate the opportunity to make your acquaintance. We each have our unique journeys. And I can testify that the journey is much less scary, and much more enjoyable, in the company of friends.
