Mine is just something I use that is a bit more descriptive for myself than most other choices.

Kimberley Beauregard

I have no idea how I ended up taking a liking to the name of a Stilwater street gang, but here we are.  Otherwise, I'd have gone for Kimberley, my chosen female name.

Pica Pica

I thought the dirt eating one was spelt with a 'k' - Pika.

That said, I have been forced to eat my fair share of sh.... dirt.

Mine's my name without the vowels. Not sure if there's any other hidden meaning to live up to from that.

No. Pika with a k is a small, whistling rodent often observed living in mountain scree.

Tossu-sama

No hidden meanings behind my name, it's online name I've been using since 2006 and finding it hard to part with it. :D It's even slipped into real life and some people call me Tossu.

I also go by the name Lord Lauri in some places, namely Tumblr. Lauri is my real name and the title... Well, my Polish online friend dubbed me as some kinda dark lord couple years ago. :'D

immortal gypsy

We pretty much traveled when I was a kid so gypsy is an apt description and who doesn't want to live forever.  If you know Australia once we went for a small drive from Rockhampton (Queensland). We ended up in Adalaide (South Australia), I think that's roughly 4500 give or take pending what route you take

Is it, to use the example that you give, a sad name causing them to unknowingly live up to that?   Their name impacting their emotional state?

Or rather did their emotional state impact the name they've chosen?

As a hypothetical:  Someone wanders on here, horribly depressed and looking for support and help.  In their depression, they don't pick a cheerful name, because that's not where their mind is at.  Their emotional state directs them to select a name more fitting with how they feel, and thus they choose a sad name.  And because they're depressed, because that's their mindset, most of the posts, and threads and comments are going to show that as well.

Depression is not so easily overcome or chased away.  It can linger, everyday, sometimes for years.  So it's entirely statistically possible to rarely see a post outside that mental state, if at all, with some people.

The same is true for anything:  A happy person will probably select a happy sounding name and make quite a bit more happy posts.  A funny person, likewise, a humorous name with many humorous posts.  An aggressive person will select an aggressive sounding name and show their aggressiveness in many posts and threads.

I don't see it as the name influencing the poster, but rather who the poster is and where they're at mentally influencing both the name and the posts they make.

Kimberley Beauregard

An update now I've changed my display name.  I was playing mafia on this other forum I frequent and was put on the same team as this awesome South African dude I get on with.  We both role-played as female characters and he named his Kimberley Beauregard.  I was fixated on this, partly because I'm a fan of the cosplayer Eve Beauregard.  He thought it was cool I chose Kim as my female name and told me to seize the world.  I know for sure I interact with the right people.

I'm kind of surprised how little I seem to live up to that title "the fusion of geekdom and nerdery" on this site... I seriously don't post about binomial theorem, roller coaster physics, my love of anime, and memorizing digits of pi enough... :P

Lara the Lover and the Fighter

So I say one day, "Wife.  I need a new name." She looks at me and says, "You look like a Lara."  Instantly I think of my years playing this:

Not that I'm into skimpy clothes but I do love Lara Croft and would love to blow stuff up if I had the chance.  Long story short, that's my name and I'm a lover and a fighter.  If I love you, I'll fight for you.  No matter what.  And I love you all!

This is a cool thread!  We are learning about each other. :D

Edit: Whoa!  I just realized that we are both holding the gun the same way!  That was a total accident! lol

ReaverMarcus

my name is actually I started using the name Reaver online (after seeing the character in Fable 2 for the first time and pretty much falling in love with the character) so it's kind of stuck with me.
As for the Marcus, my current middle name actually starts with mar, but it's a really girly song name. I was thinking of names that I could use that go well with Reaver and that's how Marcus came about. That plus it's not a super common name either.

nether

Nether is the pain and sorrow of all those who suffer. I would contain your pain that everyone else may live happily.

It is kind of a life motto. I will do anything for other people. I'm an incredible shoulder to cry on or vent to, but at the end of the day, I cannot escape who I am. I have so many regrets and my outlook on life is very grim.

Back to happy face mode.

Ltl89

I think I live up to my name, lol.  When all is said, I really am trying to grow, learn, and adapt to life around me considering the circumstances that I face.  Learningtolive seems like an appropriate title.  Also, I love music and it's a big part of my life, so I named myself after a song.  A song with lyrics that sort of described where I've been, where I am, and where I want to be.   Even though the song's intent is much different than my own interpretation, I see so much personal meaning that really reflects my life.

There was no time for pain
No energy for anger
The sightlessness of hatred
slips away
Walking through winter streets
alone
He stops and take a breath
With confidence and self-
control

I look at the world and see no
understanding
I'm waiting to find some sense
of strength
I'm begging you from the
bottom of my heart to show
me understanding

I need to live life
Like some people never will
So find me kindness
Find me beauty
Find me truth
When temptation brings me to
my knees
And I lay here drained of
strength
Show me kindness
Show me beauty
Show me truth

The way your heart sounds
makes all the difference
It's what decides if you'll endure
the pain that we all feel
The way your heart beats
makes all the difference
In learning to live
Here before me is my soul
I'm learning to live
I won't give up
Till I've no more to give

Listening to the city
Whispering its violence
I set out watching from above
The 90s bring new questions
New solutions to be found
I fell in love to be let down

Once again we dance in the
crowd
At times a step away
From a common fear that's all
spread out
It won't listen to what you say
Once you're touched you stand
alone
To face the bitter fight
Once I reached for love
And now I reach for life

Another chance to lift my life
Free the sensation in my heart
To ride the wings of dreams
into changing horizons
It brings inner peace within my
mind,
As I'm lifted from where I've
spilt my life
I hear an innocent voice
I hear kindness, beauty and
truth

The way your heart sounds
makes all the difference
It's what decides if you'll endure
the pain that we all feel
The way your heart beats
makes all the difference
In learning to live
Spread before you is your soul
So forever hold the dreams
within our hearts
Through nature's inflexible
grace
I'm learning to live

Amyc101

Mines unimaginative and's just my name, the first letter of my surname (Clark) and a number since I've found AmyC is generally taken I just do it out of habit.

That said, I used to use different forum names when I was younger and would usually take the name of a character from a book/game/film that I had a particular empathy with. The most common one I used was Mortarion a character from Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 universe. They've recently changed some of the characters backstory but at the time I empathised with his quest for absolute justice in all things, his fortitude (both mental and physical) and his grim determination to see everything through to the end, no matter what. In the old lore of the 40,000 universe his brother uses his need for absolute justice to trick him into joining the wrong side in a civil war but hey, nobody's perfect.

I hadn't ever thought about why I chose the names I did until I was at a job interview about 4 years ago and the interviewer looked at my email address which was also Mortarion, asked what it mean so I explained and as the final question for the interview he just said "What does Mortarion mean to you?" to which my answer was "Excuse me?" and he explained that in his experience when choosing someone chooses a name of a character or person it is usually because they have a lot of respect for or desire to be that character, or at the very least that character epitomises character traits that the person values.

It was an interesting thought, and consequently I tend to over analyse names now!
