My friend and I are both trans-identified undergrad students. He came out a year before I did and has been working since then to convince his parents to let him start hormones without cutting off his tuition. I came out a year after, was fairly immediately accepted by my entire family as, unlike my friend, I come from a very liberal family. I was able to start hormones 5 months after coming out, but my friend is still struggling two years later. He also has some other significant emotional and mental health issues, which I have also had experience with. My friend has really hard time communicating with his parents, which isn't helped by the fact that they are extremely close-minded.
I want to help him, but I'm afraid he'll either become dependent on me emotionally, which he's done to several other people with ill effects, or he'll resent me for having an easier time with my family. Does anyone have ideas on how I can help him?
