I was rather happy with the selection of the new seven wonders of the world, mainly because Machu Picchu in Peru was chosen (yeah, I'm biased  ;) :P); however I think that the pyramids of Egypt should be one of them.  I just don't understand why The Christ the Redeemer Statue and The Taj Mahal were.  Not that the latter aren't fantastic monuments, but the pyramids were build with stone tools 5000 years ago, and the Taj Mahal was built by a rich king 400 years ago. You simply can't compare the two. I personally think that leaving the pyramids off invalidated the entire event.

THE NEW SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD

1.  Chichen Itza, Yucatan, Mexico.

2.  Christ The Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

3.  The Great Wall, China.

4.  Machu Picchu, Cuzco, Peru.

5.  Petra, Jordan.

6.  The Colosseum, Rome, Italy.

7.  Taj Mahal, Agra, India.

- Christ Redeemer statue I do not agree at all with.

I think Taj-Mahal should be in.

The pyramids should certainly be there.
They've been around for thousands of years and where in the original 7!!!

Yes... The Pyramids should have been in the Seven Wonders of the World.

Apparently this was an internet vote, which ran for about a year.

If we would have known, we may have scrapped enough votes to get "Susn's Place Transgender Resources" into that category.

ok, i think the egyptians took it a little too far by saying they felt insulted that they had to compete. but really.. isn't it ridiculous having something like the statue of Liberty in that list all together? i mean what's wondrous about the statue? it's less than a century since it's been built. it is completely known where, how and by whom it was built.  come to think of it, the egyptians were right asking 'what the heck?' it's kind of like having paris hilton against Bono in a singing contest, you know?  ::)

I would have replaced the Christ Redeemer statue with the terra cotta army if not the Pyramids.

I'm not much of a fan of things that tyrant kings built with armies of slaves to glorify themselves in death.

I'd take New York City over any of these.  I'd probably take the Empire State Building, if you want something individual, over Christ the Redeemer, the Colosseum, and possibly the Taj Mahal (which is also a pretty impressive piece of architecture) -- it's easy to forget how far beyond the imagination a 100-story building was for almost all of history.

If you want something that isn't well understood, Stonehenge should be considered.  I'd also nominate some of the things the Mayans did -- they were ridiculously far ahead of their time in mathematics and astronomy.

The Rook and Gaskill, a pub in York before it got defiled by Nottingham Rock brewery. Now that was a wonder of the world, opposite Jenny's Chip Shop - wonder number two.

yay! the event happened in my home city :D
but goddamn... they should have chosen someone who could speak slightly better english when presenting the 7 wonders...

i liked most choices and am happy that the candidates were man-made constructions (almost) all standing for more than 100 years.

taj mahal was a great choice in my opinion, but christ the redeemer... well i dont know
edit: yeah stonehenge would be great too. its mysterious enough :P .
btw. ChildOfTheLight isnt chichen itza mayan?

the pyramids not being a candidate was okay for me. Maybe they could have been included in the new 7 wonders without a voting, but really no problem

I'm sorry but the statue is not significant as a world icon. I know that it has great religious meaning, but a wonder of the world?  What about the temples at Angkor Wat?  Those are amazing!  (Did I even spell it correctly?)

Yep.  I overlooked it.  It was actually the thing I was thinking of, too.  It really shows their knowledge of astronomy and mathematics (possibly the best in the world at the time), among other things.
