I am LIVID about this.

This was transmitted earlier to my FORMER therapist.

I need someone who knows what they are doing, and that would appear to be Kathryn, my new therapist.

And then to assure that my train of thought was COMPLETELY destroyed,  THE PHONE RANG AGAIN, in order to announce the presence of a new message.

I AM LIVID.

I could not believe it and I find that inexcusable, from a professional standpoint.

That served as the 'Coup De Grace"; I am changing therapists.

In fact, I already have.

Oh what I would give for a therapist that understands GID on this island. I talk to one 4500 miles away out of my pocket. We do need someone who makes us feel comfortable. Ang..

We don't have therapists in the U.K but we have to see psychiatrists or psychologists as gender dysphoria is percieved as a mental illness by many quarters. Most of the psychiatrists are trained in psychiatry but have no knowledge of gender issue's and they hate it when you know more than they do...

Just a note...

Generally speaking in North America when we seek councelling, therapy on these issues we refer to it as being in therapy and therefore generally refer to the people conducting the therapy as therapists when in fact they are psychiatrists or psychologists as required by the SOC (there's that word again) :)

Steph, I imagine in the U.S.A they have some kind of training in Gender Dysphoria. In the U.K they are very limited. From my own experience in the U.K NHS psychiatrists don't comply with the SOC..

While there are many competent therapists with much experience with GID, I believe that there are many more who do not have this experience.  As far as training goes I imagine that it would be more along the lines of discussions and consultations with others along the lines of what I did with a board of psychiatric residents two years ago.  One must remember that although a therapist may not have experience with GID they still have the diagnostic skills, just as an MD who is not a cancer specialist is still able to give a fairly accurate diagnosis.

Your statement on how NHS psychiatrists don't comply with the SOC is troubling and is probably the reason for the slowness of diagnosis by NHS pshrinks, floundering around with their own ideas.  While many don't agree with the SOC at least they are a standard and one that is very accurate.

One NHS Psychiatrist (see the 'press for change website' for details) at Charing Cross GIC in London has tried to change the SOC and caused uproar within his peers.
