Made a major mistake in the ladies room today......

So i was in a restaurant today with a girl friend and I had to go pee. I strode confidently into the women's restroom like I owned the place and there were 3 stalls with closed doors and no way to tell if anyone was in the stalls. I tried the first stall and found it empty so I locked the door and went about my business.

Some other women came into the bathroom and then suddenly someone was knocking on my door and was rattling the handle. That was completely unexpected and I was startled and I said something about the stall being occupied before I could think.... in my boy voice.

Whoops.

Luckily no cops were called and I got out of there successfully.

Lesson? Always be ready to use your girl voice.

It really freaks me out that women are so chatty in the lady's restroom, not that I mind talking its just that in that confined echo chamber even my girl voice sounds deep to my ears.

The person that rattled the door handle had a child with them which made it worse 

I went to a support group meeting with the same girl friend one time; I needed to pee but we got there late so I had to wait until the meeting was over and then I made a beeline for the women's room. Sure enough someone came in right behind me, used the stall next to me, and started chatting. *gulp* My girl voice came out that time thank heavens - and you are right about the echo chamber effect - I still sounded deeper than I wanted to.

I am at the point where I need to be able to fluidly switch between my boy & girl voice since I have to present both ways for the next few months; I keep forgetting to mentally think about which voice to use, or I try to use my girl voice and it doesn't work and I croak something out instead.

I think that I need to discuss this with my voice coach.

I know several transwomen who haven't worked on their voice at all. They sound totally like men, and yet they use the ladies' all the time.

Sure voice and passing helps, but we're allowed to use the rest room anyway, even with a Basso Profundo. I think most people understand that.

This is very true.

Also if you are afraid of having a male voice while in a stall, you can just do what I did and knock back to let them know you're in there

I totally understand the anxiety, though. Even after VFS, I still pretty much keep silent in the restroom

I had a similar experience in the Motorway services in France.

I went in the  cubicle, locked the door to be  confronted with a hole in the floor. To make it worse it was clearly designed for an Amazon on steroids.

The two footpads were a good 24in apart and they formed an equilateral triangle with the hole.

Try as I might I couldn't just squat and keep my balance whilst positioning my exit over the hole so I had to resort to pressing on the side walls to stop myself disappearing down the hole.

I was wearing a dress with no hands to keep it off the floor so I had to roll it up and tuck it into my bra as my knickers were down and I couldn't tuck it into them.

I'm now balancing precariously over the hole with my meat and two veg dangling into the abyss on full display..... when the door burst open as the lock clearly hadn't done it's job. I let out a sound as a reaction/panic which was oooof in a very male voice.

Maybe she thought I was saying "I'm laying an egg"

That is what I found weird about Europe, even in seemingly "civilized" Western/Northern Europe.  A fancy ceramic floor loo, but still nonetheless a hole in the floor, are you kidding me? LOL

I would be one of those women. I have a very deep voice (think James Earl Jones) and have not worked on my voice at all. While my voice is my biggest tell, it also causes me less stress than other issues. My Driver's License says female, I use female facilities.

I think the hardest part of using the woman's restroom is when there is a line of women inside and you have to stand there shoulder to shoulder.  This always gets me uncomfortable. Because if you are read out and about is one thing but being read in the ladies room would be another story.....
