Melanie, if you use one with ash in the name, it helps out a lot.
Though the easiest way to not have to deal with that yourself is to get it professionally done.

With all due respect, DO NOT use box dyes, EVER. Even if they contain the title "ashiest of'em all"
Box dye damage the hair as they very often contain high percentage of peroxide in them, and getting them out of the hair is just.. Ugh. Bye.
Plus they're not versatile, as getting an ashy blonde is very, very personal. It depends on your base-colour.
As I said, EVERY dark hair fades black, dark brown, reddish brown, red, red orange, orange, orangey yellow, golden yellow, yellow, pale yellow, white, you're bald b*tch

Getting your hair done professionally is not a guarantee you'll get it done nicely. I was disappointed couple of times by what the hairdresser did to my hair and they had a lot less knowledge about the hair than I did.. Bye.
Do it yourself. Don't use higher percentage of developer than 20 vol, keep it for 30 min max, use lots of conditioning masks, protein treatments, coconut oil, argan oil, and once you get to pale yellow, dilute purple veggie hair dye with lots of white silicone-free conditioner and voila.
Good luck!
