As I prepare to go full-time I find myself in a quandary about what to do with my hair. I am 49, and while my MPB has filled in a good deal on HRT, it's still not where I would like it to be, so I have some questions:

1) Has anyone had any luck with monoxidil (sp?), hair weaves, or extensions?

2) Who at my age wears a wig and how much success have you had? I had one I like, that's medium length, and I'm thinking about buying a shorter one for work (I think it would be better for transition since my natural hair isn't quite shoulder length yet).

3) For those who wear wigs, do you keep your natural hair underneath long or short? Do you feel less femme after coming home and removing your wig? That'd be my concern. I won't be able to wear it all day (I can't see me wearing it for yard work or to take the dog for a walk for example).

4) Has anyone ever "graduated" from wigs to their natural hair?

Thanks in advance!

Jane

I wear a wig nearly everywhere. I don't get clocked often and think I look pretty good.

I keep my hair long underneath, and occasionally go out with just a hat to cover my forehead and the crown of my head, with my real hair cascading down the back. Doesn't look nearly as good and I get stares and scowls. Haven't had much "fill in". It seems that's sort of rare.

That's what I was thinking about doing...maybe getting a yard work hat and wearing a ball cap when I take the dog for a walk.

I guess the wig still fits okay with the long hair underneath? You wear a wig cap I suppose? How is the wig during the summer months?

I've never considered wigs a "graduation" thing, perhaps because my own hair was well below my shoulders long before I ever bought a wig. I've always worn long hair and wigs just because I love hair and hairstyling.

You can certainly wear your hair long under a wig just fine. If you're one of the lucky ones with super thick hair, you can still contain it under a wig. Just pull it back in a high pony, then wind it flat against the upper back of the head and secure it with a few Bobbie pins. A wig cap is an easy alternative to this and many people prefer them. I don't, though. Living in a warm climate, I prefer to wear wigs without one because it seems cooler and less itch-prone.

I've never used weaves, but I have used removable extensions. The absolute best type is called "Flip in Hair" or "Halo Hair". Do a YouTube search for some great videos on these. It's one or more wefts of hair on a single loop thread about 6-7" in diameter. You lay it on top of your head, then pull your top hair though the loop. Your own hair holds the loop in place, so there's no need for clips. It just feels like your own hair.

Unforch, the loop thing only gives you length or volume, though, and doesn't help on top. You can get top pieces, some even with lace fronts, though. The trick with any extensions is to have a pro match the color to your own. Don't order them yourself from the Internet because you almost certainly won't match your color.

MPB and I became aquanted when I was like 14-16. Wigs are my only option. My natural hair length is not a factor.

Just don't get scared by prices. Expect to spend easily $100 for anything passable(?). If it's going to be an every day thing, buy 2, one to wear while the other is washed and styled

I haven't had a problem yet with hair length underneath. I don't use a cap. I just pin my hair up with a handful of bobby pins.

If it's not windy, my wig sees fine in the summertime. If it's windy, it turns into mop pretty quickly.

I haven't tried it at the shore.

Wow. That's a wig in your avatar? I'm impressed. You wear it well!

I'm 48, had some luck with minoxidil but not enough (not yet anyway)...keep my hair short and always wear a wig out. Good idea to get a few in case you need back up or the one you washed last night still isn't dry.

Hi

I wear a top piece.  Basically a "skull cap" that covers the bald spot on top of my head and extends an additional inch around the perimeter.

I wear mine using double back wig tape across the front, and then clips sewn into the piece to secure the backs and side.  An alternative is to have the hair clippered down to buzz cut underneath the piece then have the piece bonded to the hair.  The bond needs to be redone every 3 to 4 weeks.

My top pieces are custom made to fit my head.  They are human hair, which is  permanently colored to match a sample of my hair.  Well actually it is a sample of my hair which has been colored slightly.  The closer you are to your natural color the better.

This system has been working well for me.  My natural hair with the exception of my MPB areas is really healthy and has grown out well.  For exercise I usually don't wear my piece, but I can if I want.  In that situation the piece is a great advantage over a full wig in that the sides breathe and sweat is carried away by my natural hair.

I don't really swim where I put my face under water.  In theory it is possible but even if the piece stays on, the hair tangles badly and doesn't look natural. At a pool party I am just one of those "girls" that wears makeup and pins her hair up while in the water.

Camping and such, I usually don't wear my hair piece.  Or I wear it for the drive and then fold my piece away.  After that I am a quick change artist between lots of hats

Best Wishes,
Elaina
