U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said yesterday that he's "open" to reviewing the military's policy of banning transgendered people from serving.

From The Guardian:
He said: "I'm open to those assessments, because ... every qualified American who wants to serve our country should have an opportunity if they fit the qualifications and can do it."

He also said that the military's transgender policy was more complex than their policy on gays and lesbians, "...because it has a medical component – these issues require medical attention," and that "[a]ustere locations where we put our men and women in many cases don't always provide that kind of opportunity."

I guess that's better than the old line about gays: that they'd "destroy unit cohesion."
