I have found a way to deal with my depression in a way, and been thinking lately to move on with my life and do something that matters for the community, and that is to join the Swedish armed forces. I am currently Pre-op and been on HRT for 1.5 years and will have my SRS and everything done in 2 years. Meanwhile I will build up my body with strenght and stamina.

But of course I am a bit worried. My girlfriend is in the Swedish army as Corporal and is also MtF, but she has not come out yet. She doesn't really know about the policy the army have regarding LGBT in the army and what rights we have. But I have asked the recruiting center, and they said that there should be no problem. And that's the answer I got. I am most concerned about if you are allowed to bring your hormones during excercises for like 2 weeks, because they don't want people to be dependand on medicin if a conflict breaks out. I will most likely to know more about that when I am being examined. The recruiting center didn't know regarding that.

Is anyone here who's living in full time and serving in the military? I know that it depends from nation to nation...

There are some members here who are in the military but the ones in the US Army are not out or transitioned, as far as I know being trans in the US military will get you discharged. There are a number who have transitioned since leaving the military. There are a few trans people in the Australian Armed Forces, including Kate McGregor a Lieutenant Colonel who publicly transitioned while serving (and still is). Other than that, I've got nothing, just make sure you know what the policy is 100% before enlisting. Good luck!

There is a thread here of a US Navy FtM service member who got away with being "stealth" for several years, before being found out and cashiered.  I don't know how you can expect to serve much less pull it off in any military service that does not permit it.

Beyond that, military service is not a great way of dealing with depression (in fact if you say that during your recruiting/induction, you will probably be rejected).  Universally military life... sucks.  For the most part.  Sometimes it can be cool, but mostly its annoying and stressful, and its easy to get depressed, really depressed. And your have ready access to guns and other dangerous things...  You might really want to reconsider, esp. as a transperson.

Kate McGregor is an inspiration to all us Aussies :)

A straight line may be the shortest distance between two points, but it is by no means the most interesting

Wow, I didn't know there were any countries with accepting militaries. Kinda wish I had been able to transition and serve as a female. Personally I enjoyed my time, but it was still tough since I found out you can't hide from being trans! :P Even in the military. But with an accepting environment.....that would've been amazing. My only advice is to think very hard about this, it is not for everyone, like JamesG said it is unbelievably tough and demanding. But if it is something you feel strongly about and they are supportive of trans individuals then go for it girl!
