Weight + HRT.

Hi, I'm Leia. I'm young.
That was my mini intro, now onto why I am here.
Basically I am over weight, and I really want to start hormones.
I weigh about 273 (I was 367) and my goal is 177-180.
Mind you... I am 6'0-6'0 1/2 tall.
:D Which leads me into my NEXT thing.
I understand, there is a option to wait.. But I don't want to..
I'm growing and I don't want to be huge by time I start taking hormones.
And besides that I don't want to wait because I want to start my journey.. Of finally being me and finally being happy.
So.. Should I wait or should I HRT & Diet?

Fyi.
I get called "she/her" basically on a regular basis.
My face is very feminine and so is my natural body structure.
That's what leads me to the conclusion that people only question "Is that a he or a she?" because of my height.
(which I know isn't going to change.)

Hi Leia, welcome to Susan's.


I lost 65 pounds in one summer by simply walking. At first I could barely get around the block. After a month I was doing about 10 miles before work. After 2 months, 15 miles. It can happen but starts with you taking control of your activity and diet. You are not alone in the need to lose weight and we have a few who have started a thread to help encourage you to keep on track. It is a Friday weigh in mostly. I think you will find it encouraging.

You can start with trying small changes in clothing or accessories. Seeing a counselor at school if you can't see a therapist is also a good way to start.

Here are some rules and answers to some often common questions.

Welcome! only advice I can give is take it slow, dont rush and let things kinda naturally work.  Losing weight isn't a quick process, and its not crazy difficult if you gradually cut down rather than starting with massive cutbacks, at least for me personally.  I was once on a diet of mostly varna and grease, and I gradually eased into a diet of mostly raw veggies.  I ran into serious trouble when I rushed things and had a bit of an eating disorder.  As far as hormones go, yeah it probably is a lot harder to lose weight fast on them, and they might push your weight up about ten pounds when it stabilizes as opposed to not being on them, but that varies.  I rather envy your height, I started off 5 10, and was looking forward to being a tall chick, but after losing almost 3 inches from pelvic tilt, well, I'm just slightly tall now

Hi Leia,

Weight issues are one of the problematic ones for going on HRT. The main medical issue for MtF on E is developing or exacerbating heart disease, particularly stroke or deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Coupled with that it is a lot easier to lose weight prior to HRT than after.

So, keep to your weight loss goals, join in the threads to help and work to produce a gorgeous new you.

You need to be aware that testosterone blockers will stop the male hormone dominated growth of your bones, as well as stop the male pattern hair development (beard and pubic hair), as well as male pattern baldness hair loss (and, yes, male pattern baldness often begins at a relatively young age).

I think Cindy has a good point, that it much easier to lose weight prior to starting HRT. Testosterone blockers should not be used for an extended time (1 1/2 years?) without estrogen hormones, as having NO hormones, estrogen or testosterone, generally results in the body depleting the bones of the calcium they have built up. I don't know what the differences would be for someone who was still building bone, but I suspect it wouldn't be good. Good luck!

BTW, testosterone blockers often cause some of the available testosterone to be converted to estrogen, which may also make it a little more difficult to lose weight. However, the time that this will go on seems to be limited. Just keep up the good work, and keep your goals in mind, and remember to replace those goals with new ones, as progress is made!

I'd definitely wait unless you just don't care about the results, but that seems like a silly notion.  You likely want to transition well and have the best results, so work to achieve them.  Going for hormones early is not a good idea if you hope to have a nice feminine figure, especially if you are overweight.  Before starting HRT, you should be underweight.  I'm shooting for < 20 BMI  before I even ask my therapist for the letter.

thats what I didn't want to know. but thank you so much for that information and to the rest of you ladies. I guess i'll just wait.. next stop 100 pounds in 1 year :)

I know all of the websites say HRT will cause "redistribution of body fat" but that makes it sound more powerful than it is... it's only going to change how new fat is distributed.  It doesn't shift around the existing fat on your body.

Hi Leia,

Just wanted to chime in on weight loss. I recently have been dieting over the course of the last year. I started at 200 lbs and now weigh about 159 lbs. This took about 10 to 11 months of basically watching my calorie count and keeping it within a set goal each day. I did not separate calories between protein, fat, carbs. Basically treated them all the same and only watched total calories consumed. I coupled this with cutting out fast food and soda which is a huge source of calories for most people. I started eating more lean meats like chicken and venison. Kept beef to a fair minimum. Drank more water. Exercise varied but my job is pretty active so I get plenty there. My diet did allow snacks and such. Pretty much ate what I wanted as long as the calorie count remained below my set goal each day.

I use an app on my iphone to track my calories. It's called Lose It! and it's pretty good. I set my start weight, my goal weight, and how many lbs I want to lose each week (Between 1/2 to 2 are the options) and it sets a daily target. As you lose weight and enter your new weight into it, it gradually reduces this calorie target.

My current stats:
I am 6'1" tall, genetic male, weigh 159 lbs, I'm near the top end ideal weight for a female with my height, around mid to low range for male. BMI around 21. I hope to start HRT soonish and think I'll have good results with my recent weight loss. Once the weight came off, I was surprised at the results. I apparently had a natural hourglassish figure hiding under that weight. ^_^v

But like others have said, start with diet changes, exercise, and you'll reach your goals. The best part of starting diet changes is you get used to them over a period of time so by the time you do start HRT, etc, those diet habits will be natural. I have some days I have to eat quite a bit extra just to keep the calories up. :P
