I'm 27 and everyone here in Osaka thinks I'm in high school... I don't get carded (since no one cards anyway, at least in kansai) but my poor husband gets some dirty looks for being with a "high school boy".
Haha, good thing Japan is a leave you alone type of culture. Just curious, what kind of people give the dirty looks?

I actually haven't "transitioned" at all yet, so even though I look young to me, I look my age to everyone around me. My masculine clothes, short hair, and mannerisms are just read as a "kakkoii (cool) New Yorker". I don't even get read as lesbian! Forever a freakin' mystery to me...lol.

Basically because the voice becomes lower because the vocal chords thicken.  Obviously, adult vocal chords may have more difficulty thickening than young, supple ones.  That being said, it's also likely due to that person's genetics - or the fact that they may have only been on T for a year or less.  People here, myself included, still experience voice drops years into it.

You have a point, but you also need to remember that menopausal women may experience a dropping in their voice due to lower estrogen, hence older women sound so different from younger ones.
Come watch with me as our world burns.

Ohhhh, so that's why older women sound so badass and sexy! 8)

I hear kakkoii a lot when I go out. Lol. Holding hands with my husband always results in school girls giggling at us like crazy. I am glad I'm not read as a lesbian anymore, but before transition....

The dirty looks come from a variety of places. When it comes from other gaijin I usually pass, and they dislike seeing two gay guys on their vacation. Of course, I avoid tourist areas like the plague. From the Japanese, it's usually obasan. Not obaasan, because Osaka obaasan and Ojiisan are awesome. Just the Middle aged women in their 30-40s. Mostly housewives with little else to do but gossip. The Ossan are too worn out I care much, but they do look at me occasionally.

Haha, do you two look like a real life BL couple? ;)

Weird, I would have thought obasan would be amused rather than something negative. Are the ojiisans OK with it? Wow! I thought they would be the most homophobic. That's nice to hear.

The Middle aged ladies only. The old ladies think we are funny. Lol. I don't know that we fit the BL idea, but I'm fair featured and kinda femme and my husband is all dark and looks much older. So... Yeah, I guess. XD
