Baltimore Gay Life
by Gwendolyn Ann Smith

I find myself of two minds. As a long-time transgender activist, I feel that any sympathetic media coverage of transgender people is good. It shows us in a good light and helps to give people an idea of what we're all about. Education is always worthwhile, even if a lot of coverage leaves much to be desired.

At the same time, I wonder if sometimes the news media is spending too much time focusing on the wrong things and telling stories that really are not worth the time spent presenting them.

While the media, in educating people about the TS experience I feel is being helpful, I also welcome almost anything that desensitizes the public to us. When I'm out and about I am thankful that people in this town are so completely bored with this subject that it hardly raises an eyebrow. So now there are still those who want to advocate for us but on the flip side our detractor's arguments aren't seen as being as sensational or thought provoking anymore.
To address your question, "I wonder if sometimes the news media is spending too much time focusing on the wrong things and telling stories that really are not worth the time spent presenting them." I say, "any PR is good PR."
