Hey guys. I want to go to a local technical school here in New Jersey (for building trades) in September and so I've got to fill out the application and apply for financial aid through fafsa. I have a few questions that hopefully someone here can answer. One thing is that I haven't had my gender changed with Social Security yet. I do have it changed on my driver's license though. Is this going to cause a problem with my application or financial aid if I submit this stuff with my gender as male before I get it changed with SS?

My other question is about the medical questionnaire. They want to know if I am under the care of a physician and why, and if I'm taking any medication. I'm not comfortable disclosing that I'm trans if I don't have to, so I'm not sure what I can/should put down in this section because I also don't really want to lie. I am on T and I do have a physician for that, as well as medication for my high blood pressure. None of that is liable to interfere with my performance in school, which I'm sure is why they're asking these questions.

Thanks for any help.

As to the medical question just say yes and hormonal issues. Many men have them and don't feel comfortable sharing the details.

Fafsa is another story. You could try to put male, but if they run the SSN, it will put up a red flag and possibly delay and aid. Have you tried to change the gender on your SSN?

I've been meaning to do it for a while but I've been lazy about it, since it hasn't been something that would come up until now. I'll have to get on it before I submit this stuff. I think I have a window of a few months before I HAVE to submit it so it should work out. Thanks.

Yeah, I think I will. It should be pretty easy to do though.

I hate to add to your list of things to do, but you should also have either a birth certificate or a passport with an M. If you ever need a BC, a passport is almost always (I'm tempted to say "always") an acceptable substitute.

The way I understand it, you most certainly will have trouble with your FAFSA if the SSA has you as female. So I would take care of Social Security pronto.

The medical issue is tricky. Even if you don't consider trans* a medical condition, the fact still remains that you are on medication for that condition. You will have to list your high blood pressure, though, right? What if you describe trans as a hormonal deficiency or something like that? I would actually talk to the doctor and see what he or she says--find out how to describe your condition, without outing yourself, in a medically acceptable way.

P.S. Privacy laws dictate that the school cannot call your doctor and ask questions about your history. Is self-disclosure all the school is asking for?
