Otherwise, I have been on HRT for the better part of 6 years and am wondering how my body and mind will respond to 5 weeks of cold turkey. Anyone care to provide input on what that was like for them?
Hugs
Donna

Well you where told by your doctor and one would think after all those years of study they would know what they are talking about and what is in OUR SAFTEY AND BEST INTRESTS. Those things framed on their walls are not fancy bits of paper folks.

For those of you who rolled the dice and didn't get snake eyes congratulations you want to keep gambiling like that it is your life your playing with and the house will win eventually

Why do you listen to your doctor, this

Tell that to the previously healthy cis girl 18-25 year olds I have run calls on for CVA, DVT and Pulmonary Embolism just being on birth control. Some had risk factors and some did not.

We are all individualls with different biological and chemical make up, not gingerbread men all cut from the same mould. This is why people with chronic illness have different medications. They are the ones that work for them an individual person. They have our best intrest in mind and we MUST listen to them, just because someone did it and survived dosen't mean you will be so lucky and we only have one life so we might as live as long as we can

If you're on spironolactone drop it NOW as it interacts with drugs used in anesthesia. (Spironolactone may decrease the vasoconstriction of alpha/beta adrenergic agonists. to be exact) +1 to talking about the clotting risk with Brassard's nursing staff.

I've stopped my HRT from the 2nd of June onwards... my surgery is 10th June.

No I am extremely obedient as a person but I was extremely worried that any fluctuations in my hormonal levels would affect my exams - thus I continued with them until my last paper.

I am 22 this year - go the gym everyday (before my exams) for a 2.4km run at speed 10. I eat very very clean and that's why I was hoping I would survive. I've never had any issues with blood clotting either - but just really want to be safe rather than sorry.

Thank you for all your replies! They have been extremely insightful and give me a clearer idea of the risk i am running - Yes I will be informing Dr. Brassard.

Also, thank you for the congratulations! I am also v excited yet nervous >.<

I will update this post as and when I survive (lol)

This has to be one of the most stupid risks someone can take... why do you think you know better than your surgeon?

Blood clots can affect anyone, there are factors which can put you at increased risk but it all depends on the individual just as some people can smoke cigarettes their entire life and not get cancer while others get it after only smoking a short time. running 2 miles a day and eating healthily is not going to reduce your risk factor if you still have your HRT in your system.

Anyone who tries to reassure you that this is ok is an idiot as there is a reason they tell you to stop up to 6 weeks before... were your exams really that important. I had exams as well  and surgery scheduled for right after them but i have put them off till next year as i knew my performance was going to be affected by being off HRT for the first time in 15 years. I'm not stupid enough to think I know better than my surgeon.

Difference I guess is at 36 I am a bit more grown up than you are at 22.

I hope nothing goes wrong but you have done something incredibly stupid and need to contact your surgeon ASAP.

There seems to be a bit of variation about the stopping time before surgery but all say essentially the same: all medication must stop at least two weeks before surgery. A friend was told six weeks; my surgeon has said at least 14 days. I'll do a bit more and downgrade without going cold turkey.

In the end people in accidents probably won't stop medication before - but they go intensive care for a reason. Don't play roulette with your health.
