I saw some kind of PSA with Julie Chen, a public figure I was not familiar with. Since I did not know her, I had no preconceived notions about her. All I could think was, "What's wrong with this picture?" I found her very disturbing for some unfathomable reason. I even saved the DVRed show for a little while, just for that one commercial. I finally realized that she had, well, to my mind, freaky-looking eyes. At first, I thought it was the copious makeup; she really did have a lot. Then, I realized that she must have had surgery. I think the effect looks awful and takes over her whole face, but she was an adult at the time of the surgery. She was apparently told that she wouldn't get anywhere in her career with Asian-looking eyes.
It's pretty obvious why people of Asian descent get their eyes done. I think it's sad, but if they're happy, why not? But then I think of Michael Jackson's ceaseless quest to look less "black." And I know that some people have unreasonable expectations or are cosmetic surgery junkies. I feel that they should be weeded out because they really do have other issues; surgeons should be invested enough in the mental health and stability of their clients to refuse such extreme cases. Most surgeons do, but some don't. I imagine it's harder to turn down wealthy celebs than regular everyday folks.
I have mixed feelings about cosmetic surgeries, and I do think that there should be an age limit unless the child has some kind of documented defect.
