A young Janet Mock would often hear these words from the trans women in Honolulu, where she had begun medically transitioning into womanhood. It was a compliment - it meant she did not stand out as trans.

She was always a woman, she says. The medical transition did not make her one.

Mock, who spoke Sunday at San Francisco Pride as one of the celebrity grand marshals, has written about her experiences as a trans woman in "Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More." In February, the book made the New York Times bestseller list for hardcover nonfiction.
