is the gender marker changed by birth sate or by the state you live in?

Here is the order I did mine in (change name and gender marker at the same time):


  • Name change in court (took 2 1/2 months)
  • Got gender letter (and DMV form) from HRT doctor signed and notarized with my "new" name.
  • *DL (some states you have to do SS first if they use it to verify info, but SS computers update really fast - less than a day)
  • *SS
  • Passport
* - Done on the same day

I haven't bothered with my birth certificate since TN will not ever change the gender and on the name they cross out the old name (but still readable) and type the new name about it.
