BAY CITY, MI — A transgender woman from Bay City who is a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender activist is set to lead a delegation from Michigan to lobby U.S. legislators this month for greater legal protections.

Charin Davenport, a professor at both Delta College and Saginaw Valley State University, says she plans to attend Transgender Lobby Day in Washington, D.C., Monday and Tuesday July 14-15, and ask members of Congress to support multiple pieces of legislation. Most important to Davenport are two bills, she said: the Employment Non-Discrimination Act — or ENDA — and the Student Non-Discrimination Act, which would respectively offer employment and academic protections to LGBT individuals.

"There's a history of the 'T' being dropped from these laws," Davenport said, noting that transgender individuals continue to be a highly marginalized group. "This is an effort to try and fix that.
