Let's go wheelin'!!!

Had a thought earlier today, anyone here interested in off roading? Wheeling? 4x4ing or otherwise playing in the mud with rideable vehicles?

What do you got for a rig? Where do you like to wheel, and most importantly..... Wanna go wheeling?

My current project is a '75 land rover. V8, all wheel drive, pto winch, will be installing a Detroit locker, and 38" michelin "xml's"

Ooh, I used to! My first car was a '95 Jeep Wrangler. I had a lot of fun with that back then, but I don't have the right vehicle anymore. Now I just have a Mini Cooper, which I tend to keep on the road. Lol. If I move up north again, I might get something along those lines again.

Sweet! I used to have a 97 and an 87 jeep. Definitely capable, and parts are relatively inexpensive in the off chance you break something... "Cheap Jeep"

I have a Dodge Ram 3500 SRW. I have a 8 inch skyJacker suspension lift on it and 4 inches of body lift. I'm using Ballistic Jester rims with red inserts wrapped up in 40 something inches of Nito mud tires. I am running 8 inch stacks that are coated in black. I also have Road Armor brush guard up front and back.

I haven't gotten into a mud puddle, river or pond that I couldn't get myself out of.

What do you have for traction in that bad Larry?


My current build is a rover 101 running 38" michelin xml's, on 5.75:1 one ton axels. Doesn't go too fast, then again, doesn't really need to. I hope to put in a Detroit rear and an arb front, if finances allow...
Also has a pto winch for "pulling out other people"
It's not really a rock crawler, but will sure make a hell of a trail rig

Is yours the cummins or the hemi? Id imagine the big 6 would help with the torque on those big tires

I hope you are in the northeast . I have a 2014 grand Cherokee overland diesel that has a 2.5 inch lift and mud tires.  I also have a wrangler but that's my mall crawler

So far so good. I've had it since early this spring and it has done very well. On the highway I get roughly 30ish mpg which is pretty amazing for a full size suv. I haven't been driving it much because it's still corvette season and I am still enjoying top down driving. I am in western mass. I actually used to belong to a 4x4 group out here. Back then I was into hummers. I have had 3 of them. An h1, h2 and an h3t. I used to wheel locally in the h3t because a lot of the trails around here are very tight and staying on the trail would be really hard for the big hummers. For the big ones I used to belong to the hummer club and went on several trips with them. One of my trucks, the h2 was featured in azimuth magazine, so that made me feel good.  I haven't done as much offroading as I have in the past. I have to say, in all honesty, some of the trips I took with the hummer club were some of the most memorable vacations I have ever taken. Real back to nature, fully outdoors stuff. One trip we did started in new hampshire and went across Maine. It took us 3 days since we never crossed any roads, all wilderness. Thankfully most of the guys travelled with their wives, so I had someone I could relate to

I got a Cummins in it, also why I rely mostly on tires for traction in mud/water and am lifted so high. With my extra weight I sink straight to the bottom where everything is thicker and harder allowing my tires to bite where most gasers are sitting higher and relying on traction and RPM to get them through the mud or water.

I was never really a fan of the h2 and h3. Always though for the money if I wanted a truck like that I'd just get a Tahoe. The am general hummer is another story though. I know what you're saying about the "staying on the trail" thing. I used to have a samurai that I would be able to snake down dirt bike trails with while even jeeps would have to take the long way round. I notice that there's not a whole lot of places to wheel anymore unless you belong to a club... At least around here. I'm in southern MA. We should wheel sometime lol.

Yeah, but just think... You could put a $400 Detroit in the rear end, and never.... Ever... Ever get stuck....... Ever

I already don't get stuck....and if I ever did get stuck, I would grab my cooler drop the tailgate and relax while crackin cold ones until two people with Warn VRW's show up because of my extra weight.

Warns are nice, but a little overpriced for what they are in my opinion. I'm more of a fan of power takeoff, where the winch is as strong as the engine powering the car lol. Not to mention I've been able to find plenty of 12k electric winches for under $400 and are lifetime warrantee. I think the warn counterparts are somewhere upwards of $1000
