Here is my theory about progesterone...it relaxes us and that's why some of us don't like it. Let me explain. Say there is something that we carry from the past that we are sad or mad about, that madness/sadness results in bodily tension because we refuse to accept whatever it is that happened since we are mad/sad about it. If we accepted it, then there would be no sadness/madness and no tension in the body. We would totally be relaxed. So when progesterone relaxes us, it not only relaxes our body but our brain too, forcing us to let go of whatever it is that we carry from the past, ACCEPT IT, let go of the anger/sorrow which some of refuse to do so we become depressed/bitchy/aggressive, we fight back and we get scared (anxious).
I was on the fence for awhile about progesterone's effects on the rest of the body (outside the brain), whether they were beneficial or not but I really think, at this point, that it mostly does good things, like soften hair/skin, strengthen nails, give better breast growth, etc.
Other possibility is progesterone's VERY short half-life, when taken orally such that it has a positive affect on our mood for just a few hours due to its metabolite allopregnanolone and then then there is drop and we start to feel depressed/bitchy. Perhaps if levels were steadier as is the case, for example when injected (although it needs to be injected daily), then we would feel differently?
And finally, maybe, just maybe, progesterone is the PMS hormone and just makes us feel crappy. That simple. Good for breasts, for increased subcutaneous fat but otherwise, crappy. Only useful for pregnancy and nothing else. But, I don't see how nature would make womens' bodies produce a hormone for 9 months that makes them feel less than optimal. If anything, it would have to make them feel better to increase the chances of giving birth to a healthy baby...evolution, that's how things normally work.
I've taken progesterone continuously for several months, increased dose and for now, plan on keeping it.
As always, feel free to chime in and share your thoughts. And remember, we are just discussing. No intention to tell anyone what to do and all of it is pure speculation.
