What a long road this has been... not as long as most people but from starting transition 4 years ago and now dealing with insurance to cover Phalloplasty, it has been stressful! but certainly rewarding.
I just recently found out that my insurance company approved GRS surgery with Dr. Toby Meltzer in Scottsdale, AZ. I had a consult with him in July of this year and it went really well and I must say I'm excited. I still have some particulars I need to deal with for the insurance company. I had hysto done in August of this year and the insurance process was a beast. I thought it would be more difficult to get authorization for phalloplasty than my hysto but it seemed to go more smoothly. Not sure why. I'm excited and exhausted at the same time. I'm trying to finish college and get into a graduate business program while interning for Goldman Sachs. It is awfully stressful. I'm hoping I'll be spending my summer in the desert heat of Arizona since that is when my surgery is scheduled for.
There are some more details about my process such as doctors requesting authorization without the documentation I told them they needed to provide. This was frustrating as hell because I was constantly being told that transgender surgery is a strict exclusion from my benefit plan which I knew was untrue. I would never be able to accept that decision since my insurance covered my top surgery, pays for my therapy sessions, and has been paying for basically anything that relates to my transition medically such as hormones etc..
It was a pain, but I am hoping the rest goes smoothly and that everything is worth it. I just thought I'd let people know about my experience thus far although it is rather short.
