So I'm actually getting a haircut next week *gasp*
I'm not going to lie, I'm scared and I don't know what to pick out.

Help me out please? I need something masculine.

Depends on what you are going for but I tend to think guys look the best with the hair cut as short on top as can be done with scissors.  Then shave the sides with a 3 and blend.  Then style the hair with some gel or something on the top, usually part on the left or right side, never in the middle.  This works for me when in "guy" mode pretty well.  Took me forever to figure this out, but of course, different things work for different people.

This is just my personal opinion, but I think the trick is to get it as short as possible while still allowing you to style it.  I look at a lot of guy cuts and what I notice is the mistake a lot of them make is to cut it either too short for any style, too long to have what looks like a clean style, a bad style, or part is just not correct.

Agreed. Short is good, but please don't do the feaux hawk.  It's so 2005.

Long hair is good too though.  It's hard to tell from your avatar, but it looks like you might have some bangs...which are very feminine.  If you want to keep it longer, just grow the bangs to be the same length.  And then don't take good care of your hair, which may sound a bit weird.  But guys with long hair don't condition or brush it nearly as often as they should, and definitely not as much as girls do.

hahah Oh god no.  Nothing like that cut! lol.   For my taste that is just too long and a fine example of bad style.  The long hair advice is good, don't take care of it, but I definitely think shorter is more masculine.  Too short will leave you with pretty much no options when it comes to styling.  The haircut style on your avatar pic is actually pretty good, but definitely looks like it has been a little while since he got it cut.  Try taking a look at  a bunch of styles on google images if you need to.

I see. I'm just worried about coming out the barber shop with something that doesn't fit or can't find a good short style for my thick wavy hair.

Yeah good point.  Don't try to go for the shortest possible thing then, that way if you don't like it, you can always try to fix it by cutting it down a little more.  Thick and wavy shouldn't be an issue.  My hair is thick and wavy, you need to find the right hair product to deal with this.  A lot of times I Just wash it and throw on a baseball cap for about 20 minutes.  If your hair is short enough it will dry in like 20 minutes without messing it up, that can keep it from being wavy and frizzy.  Then I put on some hair product, usually a tiny bit of wax or something.

Look at Antonio Banderas' looks over the years.  One of those will work great.

The great thing about short haircuts is that if you don't like it, give it two weeks.  Half an inch makes a big difference.  Womens hair is different.  It takes six months to recover from a bad haircut.

Lyric

Well, if you're really serious about getting into the male experience, you'll adjust your interests such that the style of your haircut isn't very important to you. Guys don't spend much thought on things like haircuts. They just go to the barber shop, sit down and say "give me a buzz-- extra short on the sides" and go on about their business. In fact, going to a regular barber shop rather than a hairstylist will make the choices a lot simpler, since those guys generally don't have a large repertoire of options. There's maybe a dozen haircuts at the most.

Totally not my experience. Most of my guy friends care about their hair style/cut and change it up occasionally.

I agree leaving enough to "do something" with is a good idea. That way you can experiment a little.

And do look around at what others have for hair.

Well, I'll have to say it's been a very long time since I hung out at a barber shop, so maybe guys are more picky than I remember. Anyway, an old fashioned barber shop offers a view into the male experience any newbie should check out if you haven't yet.
