A recent case in Ohio starkly illustrates the mischief that a few individuals can cause under the guise of "protecting marriage." In Ohio, a man tried to escape prosecution for domestic violence against his live-in girlfriend. Like certain individuals and politicians are now arguing in Kentucky, the man claimed that Ohio's marriage amendment prohibited the state from "recognizing" unmarried couples in any way at all. Therefore, the argument went, Ohio's domestic violence law could not penalize violence between those "living as a spouses," but only those who are legally married.
