ThePhoenix

Hello, I am the original ThePhoenix who used to post here.  I'm back--sort of.

But there is some major news coming up that will be of interest to trans* folk who are employed by the federal government.  Those of us working on trans*-inclusive healthcare need to disseminate that info quickly into the trans* community once we've gathered everything together.  The sheer number of people who read this site make it useful for that and other activist type stuff.  So I re-signed up so I can do it.

I'm not employed by the government.  But I'm intrigued about the big news.

People probably already know that the federal government no longer requires insurers to exclude trans* care in policies provided to federal employees.  We are putting together a list of all the policies offered in the 50 states along with info on whether they have dropped the exclusion or not.  We have a working draft right now, but the concern is about making sure it is complete and accurate.  Right now we know it's not complete and we are concerned that some of the plans could undergo some last minute changes before open enrollment begins.  And I hope our coalition is not the only one preparing a list.  But we are doing it and hope to have the info out by November 8, or as soon as possible thereafter.  Since that doesn't leave a lot of time to push the news out before people could be enrolled (enrollment starts November 10) I'm just creating infrastructure of sorts to get the word out.

Plus I'm getting ready to go before the human rights commission of my local government, to convince them to train the entire commission on trans* issues and cultural competence in dealing with trans* people.  I could use some stories to tell as I get ready for that.

By the way, I'm trying to retire and separate myself from activism so that I can do other things.  Apparently I suck.  :)

Thanks for the welcomes back.  Like I said in my original post, I am here strictly for activist purposes.  So I won't be getting involved in the discussions like I did in the past.  But I hope I can do some things useful to all.
