Estrogen Receptor May Play a Role in Autism

Significantly lower levels of a key estrogen receptor may play a role in autism spectrum disorders, according to a new study.

This link between autism and sex hormones could help explain why the condition is about four times more common among men than women, the researchers noted.

"Our study is the first indicator that estrogen receptors in the brain of autism spectrum disorder patients may be different to controls," study author Anilkumar Pillai, from Georgia Regents University, said in a news release. "Though this suggests a possible reason for the gender bias, we still need to determine what causes the reduced production of estrogen-related proteins."

I think it's sad that people treat autism as a boy thing. I think it's scary.

There are plenty of girls with autism and a lot of girls aren't diagnosed with autism, because people see it as a boy thing.

i'm on the fence about any connection. could be similar symptoms and whatnots in some regards but still no link, OR IT COULD JUST BE SOCIETY ENFORCING THEIR RULES ON PEOPLE LIKE ME (WITH AUTISM) WHO TEND TO REJECT TRADITIONAL RULES AND ROLES MORE THAN MANY OTHER GROUPS. I have never met an autistic person who wasn't a bit like that. We don't care about how others want us to be. I don't want to change for society. Society has to accept that not everybody fits into the same mold. Some people mistake that social dysphoria for gender dysphoria. But that social dysphoria is not something we're born with in alot of cases i think, but rather because of the mistreatment we endure. There are transgender autists for sure, a lot of them even, but that's not the point of my rant.
And i met a lot of female autists too so far. I'm even good friends with one.
