The Public Relations Director of American Atheists, a national advocacy group, published a coming out letter on the atheism website, www.patheos.com. Danielle Muscato announced her intention to publicly live as a transgender woman while continuing to serve as the public face of the atheist group.
Muscato said while she intends to maintain a mostly male presentation for the time being, she wishes to adopt her new name and pronouns effective immediately. She also expressed her desire to keep her focus on atheist advocacy.
"I consider my gender identity to be personal and, despite my passion for PR, don't intend to do much in the way of interviews about my personal gender identity if I can help it," Muscato said. "I fully support intersectionality and working together with LGBTQ activists on mutual goals, but I'm first and foremost an atheist activist, and that hasn't changed."
As PR Director, Muscato has made many public speaking appearances, both at universities and on television. The American Atheists Board of Directors have pledged to support Muscato through her transition.
