Denmark: Landmark gender recognition law comes into effect

A Danish law that makes it easier for transgender people to have their gender legally recognised has come into effect, but has caused controversy among trans activists.
The law, which was passed by Parliament in June, scraps a requirement for trans people to undergo gender confirmation surgery before they can be legally recognised as their preferred gender.

Isn't Denmark the country where you not only used to need gender-confirmation surgery to have ID changed, but also prove that you are permanently sterile and have no reproductive material stored?

theres not a rule that you need to have gender-confirmation surgery, the rule is that you must be unable to  reproduce children(which also include egg or sperm donations). so that means people would generally have to do surgerys for mtf to take of there testicals or get bottom surgery and for ftm it means hystotomy.

with the new law this is not a requirement to change the ID or name from one gender to the other, so yes its a big step.
