The psychiatrist I've been seeing for a decade said he wasn't qualified to write me a surgery letter. By phone AND email, I informed him that he was qualified (because he is), but when I tried to get in contact with him after that they just put me on indefinite hold. Earlier in the week (after I told him through a secretary that he is qualified and emailed him like he asked), they said he'd call or email me back WITHIN A DAY, it has been two weeks now, and still not a peep out of him. I need my surgery letter in just two weeks. I've even offered to write the letter for him. I thought he was a good guy, but it seems that he's determined to F- me over like just about every other medical professional I've encountered since beginning my transition.

What can I do? I can't afford to go to anyone else (my insurance doesn't cover it and I'm broke) and every other therapist has a 6 month waiting list and will want to see me several times before writing me a letter. I need the letter not only for the surgeon but for my insurance company. I'm panicking!

HEEEELP!

Have you tried just showing up at his office? (Probably not a good idea, but desperate times call for desperate measures.)

Can you book the surgery without the letter and keep working on him?

I don't know what to tell you except to delay booking your surgery . . .

*sigh* freakin gate keepers.

I went through this trying to get my hormone letter. The therapist was a post op TS, which I thought would be a good thing. I had already been living full time for about 3 years, was perfectly comfortable with my being trans and after 3 months of visiting her, she still didn't want to write a letter. I simplly wanted to start HRT. I then told her "This feels like you are just milking money out of me for as long as you can drag this out, are you EVER going to write a letter? Or is this just an income stream for you, screwing over TGs..." Her reply was "I feel this hostility is coming from your mother still trying to control your life", to which I said, "Wow, that would be a neat trick given she has been dead for over 5 years." We ended the session and she wrote the letter the next day.

As far as your problem, go there in person. If they are busy just say "fine, I'll just wait out here until they are unbusy". Do NOT let the receptionist offer to "give then a message". I've had to deal with so many doctors about trans stuff getting meds etc that put me on ignore, I've had to do this myself several times. Them not refilling meds when they said they would and then not returning calls etc etc. Going there in person and just camping out has worked for me.

Doctors belong the Good-Ole Boy club. Have the surgeons office call his office for the letter.
