Something of a philosophical question

I wonder sometimes how we have both FTM and MTF persons. Yes, I know that the spectrum is far broader than that, it's just interesting to me to see people of both biological genders "changing sides" as it were. Part of me possits that if the numbers are roughly equal that at our creation a goodly number of us switched lines on the way to the waiting womb?

I think it would be far stranger if there were only FTM or MTF, rather than both. Or do you mean why there aren't more non-binary people..?

Since I personally don't believe our "spirit" or "soul" is any one specific gender and that gender is a manifestation of our physical biology, the whys are rather easily answered for me given the current state of research into why we are trans.

Of course, those that believe otherwise will feel otherwise. Given that this is a metaphysical question, I'm not sure there's a right or wrong answer.

Isn't MtF more common than FtM though? I might think that that's due to it being more socially acceptable in many cases for a female to dress/act like a guy than it is for a man to dress/act like a female, so less FtM end up pursuing transition? It would make more sense to me if they were both equally common, but then if the difference in percentage is actually real then it might hint at some underlying biological process..

And I also agree with this. Obviously I don't want to gender people or suggest to anyone that their gender identity may not be what they think it is, but prior to coming out I was fairly well connected in the gay community where I live. A great deal of other "butch" or more androgynous leaning lesbians that I encountered expressed feelings and experiences that are very similar to the things I hear from myself and other trans people. Ultimately I think the biological percentage of people falling somewhere under the trans umbrella is likely an even split for FTM/MTF, but I do think that the numbers are more skewed socially towards fewer FAAB people pursuing any degree of medical transition.
