Hello there, I've got a question about therapy. I feel as though I'm transgender (but I'm still questioning), and I'm going to therapy soon, but not a gender therapist. My parents don't know I'm questioning my gender, and relaying these feelings to them would not be a good idea.  I have a lot of anxiety, social anxiety, and very low self esteem, which is why I'm going to see a therapist after the new years.

I wanted to know if I'd be able to relay my gender based problems to a therapist that doesn't really specialize in gender?

(Sorry if this isn't in the right section, I wasn't sure where to place it)

A lot of "gender therapists" deal with other issues. So you may have a gender therapist already.

However, the good ones specialize in it.

The previous one I had was a sex therapist and couples counselor as well.  The one I have now deals with issues of assertion and narcissism but a major part of her practice is gender therapy.

So the bottom line is, yes your therapist may work as a gender therapist but he/she may not be a good one who will get you where you want. And even a specialized gender therapist probably won't be a good fit for you, depending on what you want/need.
