The Traditional Values CoalitionTVC had prepared a list of bizarre sex studies being funded by NIH in 2003, which got the attention of the Members of Congress and researchers and was circulated internationally in the media. This set off a firestorm of controversy because researchers did not want to be accountable for how they used tax dollars.
One study, for example, paid $147,000 to Northwestern University to pay women to watch pornography with transmitters strapped to their private parts; tax dollars also went to study "lot lizards," – prostitutes who hang out at truck-stops. Another study was on "two spirited" transvestites in Indian cultures.
