I'm not looking for a job, but medically I've been asked to put my legal name on everything. They did tell me to put my preferred name in parenthesis though. I suspect since legally to that company you are your legal name, that its going to be the same thing. The HR lady at my job told me they can't change it officially until I legally change it. However there is nothing stopping me from putting my preferred name everywhere.

Legal name on application (especially if you are signing the bottom where it usually says something about the above being true and correct), and then preferred name in parenthesis.

I would put preferred name and when you are asked to sign paperwork for a background check you put your legal name.

My rule of thumb was always to use my preferred name on my resume and cover letter, but use my full legal name on official documents requiring a signature. Since I got my legal name change, those are now the same.
