Is it too early to start T?

Hi all,

I think I've asked this question before, but I just came out to myself as transmasculine about 5 months ago (and gender questioning about 9 months ago), and only came out to my friends and such a little over a month ago. Would it be too early to consider T at this point?

The more I think about it, the more I think T would be right for me! But I'm scared that I'm just psyching myself out or something and I don't wanna do something I'd regret, I guess. I'm a cautious dude! I was thinking of arranging my initial bloodwork and stuff for early summer, which would give me about 4 months to decide. I've already talked to a doctor in the area who specializes in transgender health and he says he'd be happy to arrange an appointment for me whenever I'm ready.

Just looking for various opinions!

You've spoken to a doctor but maybe a counsellor might help you to work through your concerns. You need to be aware of what T will do to you and how it will change, while you might be ready if you are feeling any doubt then I'd suggest weighing up the pros and cons as thoroughly as possible.

Well, we all want to start as soon as possible, but it will cause some changes that are irreversible, so it's best to be as sure as possible that this is what you want, truly, for the rest of your life. I'm not saying you have to wait, or how long you should wait for, but just make sure that it's a decision you're not going to regret. Some people know straight away, and some people need some time to figure it out, and if you know it's the right choice for you straight away, then it's not too soon.

I agree, spend the 4 months time discussing your needs with a gender therapist. Also joining a trans-masculine group can help you see how T effects you and how others manage all the stress around transition.

It is natural to have some doubts about HRT. After all, it is a large step and one that over time has accumulated changes that do not go away.

Thanks folks! I've been seeing a gender therapist who is also a transmasculine person and I'll continue to discuss HRT with him and then see how things look in 4 months. Thanks again for the input. <3
