So I'm in this poetry workshop at college and our assignment for this week is to write a poem addressing a body part. And the first idea that popped into my head was to write a poem to my penis. Of course the second after that I died thinking about the idea of having to read that poem out loud in front of class.

Still, it's an idea I'd like to explore and I was wondering if you guys think it would be a horrible idea to write it and maybe just give it to the professor (whom I've known for years and trust) or close friends I have in the class? I was thinking it would be a way to show them what I'm feeling and if they take it horribly I could always say it was just fiction and not really about me.

Honestly, I find the assignments that end up most rewarding (and not being another chore) are the ones that come from the heart and sort of leave you vulnerable I guess. I'd say go for it, and like you said if it puts you in an awkward situation you can always say it's fictional. It's creative work though, so I don't think it would be much of an issue really, iylu shouldn't have to justify. Your professor would probably appreciate that you'be chosen to write about something that's so personal, especially that it's how you get your best work done usually.
I'm trying to be somebody, I'm not trying to be somebody else.

If it's the first thing you thought of, maybe it's something you need to write regardless of the assignment. Also though, I think allowing yourself to be that vulnerable now will help you feel more comfortable doing so in the future.

I think I may go ahead and write two poems. One for the class and one for myself and perhaps the class, depending on how I'm feeling closer to the due date.

You make a good point.
