Hey all,

Tomorrow is my first counseling session with a psychologist, and I'm pretty nervous. She doesn't "specialize" in gender issues, but I'm sure she's knowledgeable. Right now I'm just killing time filling out this "Adult Intake" packet. From your own experiences, what can I expect for this first session?

Thanks,

madison

First is just a information session with maybe a touch on a few areas to get a idea why you are there.

A good therapist is like a best friend who will listen to you and not make judgement.

Honestly is the key.

Breathe and bring extra tissues for after the appointment.

Tears of joy i hope flow after.

Hugs

My first session was spent on history; when the first time I felt that I was different, when I first crossdressed, my relationship with my parents and if my home life was turbulent, everything that has led up or that could give evidence to support my trans* feelings.

Just be really honest. If they're as good as mine is then they'll ask questions that bring back memories you had all but forgotten about that you could reflect on to help you in some way. Good luck! :)
Carpe diem.

First appt with my old therapist was basically explaining why I was there and also explaining what has happened so far, who I came out to (wife), family situation, background (national origin/ethnicity) etc.

First appt with my new therapist was that plus explaining what I had gone through with my old therapist.

First therapist wanted zero to do with my history. Her philosophy was don't bother with the past. Deal with the present and future.

Second therapist wanted lots of details about the past, because it would help with coming out with parents.

Thanks for the responses -- and of course you were all right. We mostly just talked about history, family, and my support group. She recommended I schedule two appointments a week for the time being. Thankfully my insurance covers most of it, otherwise this wouldn't even be an option. My next meeting is this coming Tuesday, and then Friday.
