US passport gender change - any recent experiences?

While the process for obtaining a new US passport reflecting one's correct gender (as certified by your physician) seems like a relatively simple affair according to the US Department of State website, how has this played out in reality for those who have gone through the process recently? Simply a case of following their instructions to the letter and everything works out just fine, or are things more complex than they initially appear?
