Hi everyone.  Its 3am the day of surgeryand i cant sleep. So i Just thought I'd give an update and explanation of three brass arc m to f surgery experience.  In real time! Or maybe a 2 to 3 hour delay.  We'll have to see.

Ok, thus far.  You check in on saturday, the day is yours.  Go out for dinner (or stay in and eat with the group), walk whatever.  The nurse will want you back around10pm. :(  Sunday, have group breakfast and then go out and the walk and be jovial, until they want you back between 2 and 3. 9depends if you've shaved. The rooms at the recovery seem to be single, from what I've seen, with shared washrooms.

4 pm,the fun begins!!!  Your first enema.  They will explain  how it works, pretty easy todo.  A 5:30 or 6 you get dinner (amazing food).  My stomach was a bit upset after it though, combination I think of enema and nurves.  Anyway.  At 7 someone walks you over to thehospital (it's literally right nextdoor).  There you meet your new roommate.  Might even have one with the same name,  we're sure we are going to getconfused.

After checking in, Temp, blood pressure, blood oxygen,  it's time for enema number 2 and then a shower with super soap.  And then you are done for theevening.  Sit back, relax (or try to).  Listen to yourmusic, read whatever.  When you  want to head to bed you can ask for a sleeping pill.  I did and I guess it doesn't work that well.  They will wake us at 6 so we can shower before we meet with the doctors.

That's it for now.  Will update when I can.

Wake is at 5:30,then a super soap shower (its a sanatizing soap with alcohol).  Then you can brush teeth.  I was giving my preopperation drugs at 6 am. So Its now waiting from the consult from the surgeons.

Just making sure ... this is about GRS, not voice surgery? maybe it should go to the appropriate subforum then?

Anjaq.   This is about sex reassignment surgery.  Sorry I haven't been able to reply any sooner, I was exhausted and focusing on recovery.

Okay.  So they wake us up at around 5:30 and your allowed to shower and brush your teeth.  No liquids Tho.  Then you wait until the anesthesiologist comes to talk to you about your choices.    More waiting until it's your turn.  I was lucky and was first.  So around 6:30 they take you upstairs to talk with Brassard and Belanger (about 5-10 min).

Then your wisked away to the surgery room. Prepend, drugged then lights out.

About 2-3 hours later you wake up in a monitoring area (where they wait for you to wake up fully).  Then back down to your room.

In your room they ask every few minutes what your pain level is, and they check with ice to see how far the anesthesia has gone away.
For the rest of surgery day.  It's constant monitoring of pain, dressing changes and putting ice on the site.
Towards the end of the day they will give you crackers and jello to eat (if you can).  They will also see if you can stand up and walk.

The next day they take breakfast orders and try and get you up and about as much as you can (about 2-3 times). They also try and make you eat as much as you can.

By then end of day 2. They might remove your iv bag if you are able to drink enough fluids.

by day 3.  They will give you breakfast and help you over to the recover center.  (by about 8:30).  At the recovery center the first thing I,  and a few others did was brush our teeth and freshen up as much as possible.  The first 2 days at recover center you just have to eat, put ice on site, and again, keep moving!.  Throughout the day they will bring meds and things as well.
3rd day at recovery they will remove the dressing, which releaves a lot of pressure.  Down side is more swelling.  You will also be able.to shower and take a sits bath.  You have to air as much as possible, keep every thing clean and ice more!!

Up next, Stent removal and dilation.

Katie - you are aware, you are posting this in the "voice" subforum? I think people interested in gentital surgery will probably not look into this subforum for your report. I think you probably will have more readers, if you move the post to the SRS subforum?

Day 4 at recovery.  Usual breakfast.  Afterwards nurse takes you up to the exam room.  Cuts a stitch or two and you give "birth" to your Stent.   You can look at it if you wish (I didnt).  Doesn't really hurt coming out.  You just feel it slide out along with an audible squishing sound.  Then your off to your room for dilating 101.  Doesn't hurt much the first time.  Then shower and douche time.  By the time your done all this it'll be lunch time, or there abouts.  You wilp be elated that you can actually sit on the seats without the doughnut.  After lunch it's dilating again and a sitz bath (siting in a tub and just wash your junk).  You dilate again at 4 and around 9.  The last one you sitz bath and douche again.

Day 6, pretty much the same.  You get your catheter out in the morning.  Surprisingly doesn't hurt much either, they're pros at taking them out.   You do have to drink an insane amount of liquid tho, and write down everything going in or out.
Day 7, dilating routine again
Day 8, home!

If you want me to elaborate on anything please let me know.  Sorry for the delays in posts, it's super hard finding the time, or energy.

Congrats, Katie!  I have a question: do you know if they allow a travel companion to stay with you in the recovery hostel?  I'd be scared ->-bleeped-<-less going into another and this surgery alone! lol

@candence No they don't allow non patients to stay at the recovery house. They will have to find other place to stay outside of the recovery house.

The documentation provided by GRSMontreal includes a recommendation for a bed and breakfast near the recovery center for companions stay at.

If you have someone coming up with you I would recommend both of you staying off site.  It makes things easier for meeting up and planning anything.  They require you to sign out if you stay at the recovery center.

^ I think you mean only during pre-op times? I can't imagine staying off site post op. Not to mention if any nurses help is required.

Aww this reminds me of my day which feels so long ago! I hated shaving in that little shower at the hospital and rinsing with that soap! It burned my skin since it's alcohol and I just shaved! The really need to invest in new beds as well.
Got my surgery in my early 20's, now in my mid 20's living stealth

Yeah sorry only for the pre op jfong.  Definitely need to stick around afterwards lol.  I totally agree Nicole,  the beds at recovery aren't the best, the controls are nice though.
