16 Myths About Gender Confirmation Surgery

http://everydayfeminism.com/2014/10/gender-confirmation-surgery/

October 11, 2014
by Brynn Tannehill

Recently, I attended training on lobbying for transgender issues. One of the big "no-no's" was talking about medical care for transgender people.

The reason is pretty simple: People have a visceral negative reaction to the idea of genital surgery. In many ways, the reaction the idea of Gender Confirmation Surgeries (GCS) resembles the homophobic reaction people have to the thought of two men having sex.

The problem is that the lack of understanding about GCS for transgender people is the biggest impediment to actually receiving care....

Found this, though you guys might be interested in it. Not sure if this is the right place for this but its better then nowhere. This guy writes great articles, here are a few. You can see more HERE http://everydayfeminism.com/author/brynnt/
Here is the article I originally found by him. I think if you run across a friend or family member who doesn't understand, articles like these might clear some things up.

In her moving keynote speech at TransPride, 'I Am Real,' trans veteran Brynn Tannehill talks boldly about anger versus dignity and tolerance versus acceptance.

Not only was that a great article but the various trans articles on the site have devoured my afternoon as I followed the trail from one to the other, fortunately I had no plans for today

I LOVE this article. Every myth perpetuated by the bigots destroyed in one page!

Hmm. While I agree with every point in the article, it doesn't seem like it would be very persuasive to anyone who didn't agree with it before they read it. Maybe that's just my bad mood today speaking in the form of skepticism, though. At least it isn't yet another argument against being trans, so I don't know why I feel like complaining so much.

Because its genetic makeup is irregular, it quickly changes its form due to a variety of causes.

Great article. I rarely read anything from top to bottom but did with this. Considered sending it to my father and sister...

You are right but it doesn't hurt to have it exist!

I've bookmarked several pages for both my LGBT group and my mum, the trouble is that you can lead a horse to water....but it may kick you where it hurts, hang on, that's not right...or is it?  ;D

Yeah, it's probably not going to change the bigot's mind, but it might help family and friends who are the fence in their support.   It counters all the arguments they've heard and gives them (and you!) ammunition to give right back to those bigots!

I feel like someone who is "actively transphobic," meaning they are invested in not accepting trans folk, won't be persuaded. No presentation of facts or logic will, it takes time and some way to open their minds.

But there are a lot of people out there who believe some of those things to be true, and have a sort of default, passive transphobia. Articles like this can help them see that we, the transgender community, as well as medical and mental health professionals have thought and studied these issues and the trans experience a lot, and we really do understand a lot about what it means. It's not just some casual whim. Those people can be helped.

It will also help people who are supportive understand what we really are going through. Even if we could tell them a lot of those things, it's nice to have someone else make the list, and sometimes it's more convincing to have an abstract voice of authority than hearing someone we know. Especially if it hasn't yet been grasped that transgender people are every bit as sane as anyone else.

That's right, I think that for people who are on the fence or who just don't know all that much about the issues (and let's face it, there's alot of those) this is a very useful article. I was kind of joking about sending it to my father since I doubt anything will budge him on this, might help my sister since she's on the fence. My mother is supportive but probably believes a lot of the myths listed so would be very useful.

I kinda knew that was coming, and I even tried to phrase it carefully... fail.

But it's ok, there are screwy cis folks out there too. I'm talking population statistics.  >:-)

I mean, you have people who believe that Cancer is a fungus (you know, like athlete's foot). People believe nonsense not based on any actual science and they can't be convinced.

That is true.

I have actually convinced a few fence sitters over to our side, given that I am now transitioning. Some of them (my friends) viewed us primarily as sex workers and freaks. But you see, I am a well respected person, with a family, career and plenty of smarts. To see me transition has sent shock waves in their mind and they are coming to realize that we are really just normal people.

I use either my xbone or tablet to go online & have no idea how to do links with either machine but if you look at the boxes at the bottom of the article there are plenty of brilliant pieces on the site, i've bookmarked at least half a dozen

It doesn't matter how carefully you phrase something my twisted sense of humour will always find an opening
