i purchased some 3rd hand codexes awhile back, and 40k as a game does look very interesting, but i have no money for sinking into paints and models and such, especially with (currently) pre-teen nephews and a baby niece running about. (nevermind more important things to try to spend for, to build My Life with.)

however, i do like the look and flavor of the tau (with some added star wars clonetrooper flavors) and the various space marines chapters (of course :P).

also, based on the psychotic bipolarism/ multiple personality disorder of GW as a company, and im really not inclined to officially buy anything from them.

if i thought i could pull it off, i would make my own models (especially the vehicles, buildings, and other set pieces), based on gobs and gobs of photos and measurements.

Check out RPGNow.com as they specialise in downloadable printed paper and card models and miniatures for all kinds of wargaming.  After I became fed up with the cost of conventional plastic and metal wargaming models I went over to using printed paper and card models and figures and I never looked back.

Also check out onemonk.com which has a forum where a good many serious paper model makers gather.  they have quite a bit of useful free stuff for download too,
