Transitioning at 40

I'm currently 37 years old and have began thinking about transitioning.  This is something I struggled within for many years, the last time being when I was in my early 20's.  I decided to forget about it out of fear and fast forward things are resurfacing.  What's the likely hood of successfully transitioning at this age.  I don't want to end up still looking somewhat awkward or manly after the transition is complete and get strange stares every time I go somewhere.  I put 40 in the title because I understand that it takes time to get started.

I started shortly after I turned 35 and as someone said, You get pretty much what You invest into. It took longer time than for those who start in their teens or twenties - looking back, there were very little changes for the first 6-8 months apart of softer skin and some minor fat redistribution. And then at some point of time it all just started to pile up, pretty much exploding (or, if You would prefer, blossoming) everywhere. So, yep, it will take some time, but in the end... we have all remaining time of the Universe in our disposal .

Many have transitioned later on in life and pass quite well, many others have found that the happiness of being who they are outweighs if they pass or not. Cis women come in all shapes and sizes, passing is more then looking feminine. If you feel that you need to transition then try to have confidence in yourself. Besides 40 isn't that old.

Al long as you are in general good health you shouldn't have a problem. Actually by doing it now as opposed to in your twenties, you will be able to partake in the medical advances surrounding transitioning.

That is a long time to have to live with a secret not to mention being stuck in the wrong body. I think you will feel a tremendous relief. Please keep us informed.

Whatever age you are, if transition is right for you in the first place, then you're at a great age to transition. 🙂

40 is getting up there. 


And nothing wrong with transitioning at whatever age you are if its what you need to do to be happy with yourself. And its certainly not a reason to not transition. Genetics and how much money you can afford to put in to it play a bigger role in how you turn out than age from what I've seen.

I transition at 43 and it went pretty easy for me. I started passing and went full time at 3 1/2 months on HRT (even at 6'7"). I've seen trans woman that transitioned in their 60's and pass extremely well and I've also met a few in their early 20's that didn't. A lot of times it just comes to genetics and the HRT lottery.

I started at 32 and had excellent results.

(I was also on HRT within six months of figuring out that I wanted to transition... and could have been sooner if I'd wanted. Things can go quickly if you're motivated.)

I too tried/experimented, twice, in my early 20's with transitioning. At 6ft tall and BIG everything and balding everything I twice gave up on that pipe dream. Plus there was that "Some Guy In a Dress" feeling that haunted me every time I ventured out.

Funny how a lot of working on your self, accepting yourself, and loosing a TON of baggage will magically help you feel like.... A Woman.  Even at well over 50

I am 36. I thought I would be transitioning at 40 but I couldn't live as him any longer. So here I am. I started HRT late last year and it's by far the best thing I have ever done for myself.

When dressed appropriately I pass. I have had some challenges due to genetics but I've also had some good things. But it will only get better. I will get better.

I have had numerous social challenges as well. Us middle-ish aged girls (I feel young though!) have a history so we have some challenges and things to do. But we can do well.

I'm 40 and transitioning.  I started hormones in 2012 and just took things slowly.  I'm in california so it wasn't bad coming out at work.  I think it is actually good to have that career and some money saved up.  It definitely helps if things go wrong at your job or you ffs. 

It's more acceptable now so I think a lot more people are coming out regardless of age.  Just be who you are and be free its much easier that way!

I transitioned at 51 and I think I look OK. As Emily said the results may be a little slower as you age but they do come. I've been on a transitioning dose of HRT for about 15 months and the changes just keep coming. The mental changes came first and wow what a change that was! The darkness lifted and I knew what being truly happy meant for the first time.

Transitioning won't fix all of the problems in your life but it will fix gender dysphoria and if you aren't suffering from that everything else is possible  🙂

I am 53 and will be 54 next month. I love the changes I've experienced these last few months and am looking forward to the additional ones coming.  I'm sure that you will do great. The advances in education and proceedures have been fantastic for those of us who have waited until later in life.

I started to transition at 38 and I'm 61 now.  I feel that it's never too late to transition and so long as you're still breathing and above ground you're good to go.  The only tragedy is never actually doing it at all.

Wish I were 40 GF, you can do it GF. I only tried about 100 times since I was a teenager. Stop that nasty T stuff as quick as you can & get on some nice estrogen GF, it takes time for any body to change & improve.
