I know there are different cuts of pants but I am not quite sure which ones work best for making hips look smaller. What type of fabric works better too? And if you have any other tips for clothing please post them here.

Call me Ray

I really like the aeropostle slim boot cut jeans and gap flat front chinos. That said, right now nothing makes my hips too much smaller, but these seem to do better on mine than most.

I find the bootcut to work best for me.

Levi's athletic fit is my fave, but old navy regular are almost just as good.

Bootcut, regular cut, or natural fit. Stay away from anything labeled slim unless you're a very thin dude. Target has some good jeans. I have trouble finding slacks and dressier pants that fit well through the thigh/butt. I keep having to get a size up and wear them at a different point on my waist.

Boot cut and Levi's are what I have had the best luck with. I'm still figuring out dress pants. I have pretty prominent hips so I'm just happy to find anything that fits. Old Navy regular and relaxed fit worked well for me in the past too, when I was a little heavier.

Take an honest friend with you and go try on a whole bunch of different cuts and styles.  See which feel best on you and get feedback from your friend about which do the best job of rendering the shape you are looking for.  Every body is different...you need to find what is best for you.  I wear a slim jean because I have no ass and little bird legs!  :D

Never pleats, always flat front.

I actually saw that guide before, but was still confused. Seems the consensus is for bootcut (getting wider next to the foot, making rest look smaller) and slims wont work (very narrow next to the foot, making the top look wider).  Any thoughts on cargo pants?

I find the straight cut 'no boundaries' brand from walmart work.

For cargos I like Wrangler Legacy cargos from Walmart.

I forgot the specifics, but Levi jeans work great for me.

I wore shorts almost all through winter, because I hate the way my jeans look on me. I had some really cool Zoo York jeans that fit good but I grew out of them. Its a shame, because I love jeans and they're a manly thing to wear because you can get rough. I feel like the weird boy that always wears cargo shorts.
