Well, I spoke with my HR lady today. Turns out the problem with my hair had nothing to do with length - it was just a matter of tidiness. One day last weekend, I walked into the daily standup meeting with an admittedly messy ponytail - it was like 80 degrees in the security office with no fan! Apparently, someone complained about how disheveled it made me look. I even know who, because I distinctly remember getting a very unpleasant look from one particular employee. Not that I really care, she and I have never butted heads, she's just a very strictly professional sort when she's at work. But I digress, I'm rambling. Bad habit.

Moving forward. My HR lady told me there was no need to cut it, and that off-the-record, it was a really good look for me. I wasn't really violating any company policy, just wound up toeing the line. As long as I keep it neat, and eventually start pulling it back once there's enough to uniformly pull back with nothing extra hanging down, I can wear it as long as I like. I never even had to bring up being transgender.

Needless to say, I'm tickled pink and breathing easy!

You and I both, sister! I did mention that I had a 'legally-protected reason for wanting to look a certain way', but I didn't feel comfortable saying what as I didn't have proper documentation to accompany it. She said that without documentation, she unfortunately could not take that into consideration. I told her I understood, and was aware coming in that that was a possibility. Overall, she was incredibly understanding. I'd never had to speak with HR since this particular woman took over, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm officially 100% comfortable with having to go to HR for anything now, though. She proved that I definitely have an ally in her. She's there to do her job regardless of any personal bias...one of the few people in this company I've seen that can set aside literally any and all reservations or opinions they have to address something. She's a good fit for the job.

Yay congratulations, glad the meeting with HR went well.

To keep the hair tidy and yourself out of trouble might be time to invest in some bobby pins. Lots and lots of bobby pins, (they will keep disappearing)

I have a bunch, I just can't figure out how to make the damn things work!  ::) go figure, right? I tend to think that would cause an issue, though, as effeminate behaviours of ANY sort, even if it's just limited to hair, would be a great way for me to get bullied. I work in a very gender-conforming environment...the men are MEN, and the women are girly. There's no in-between. I mean, yeah, one of the desk clerks came out gay and nobody cared, but he LOOKS 100% straight (though that didn't help him fly under my gaydar!)...but I still have to worry a bit. At least until I can get to a doctor, anyways...waiting on the insurance company to provide me with some sort of bloody proof.
